Construction Of India’s First State-Of-The-Art Semiconductor Fab Begins In Dholera
India has taken a historic step toward technological self-reliance as construction begins on its first AI-enabled, state-of-the-art semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat, led by Tata Electronics in partnership with Taiwan-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC).
Construction of India’s first advanced semiconductor fabrication plant has officially commenced at Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), marking a defining moment in the country’s semiconductor and electronics manufacturing journey. The mega project is being developed by Tata Electronics in collaboration with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) of Taiwan and represents one of the largest technology investments ever made in India.
With a total investment of approximately ₹91,000 crore, the semiconductor fab is designed to manufacture up to 50,000 wafers per month once fully operational by 2026. The facility will focus on producing chips in the 28nm to 110nm range, catering to high-demand sectors such as automotive electronics, artificial intelligence, data storage, power management, and wireless communication technologies. Advanced AI-driven manufacturing systems and next-generation automation tools will be deployed to ensure global-quality output.
The project is expected to generate over 20,000 direct and indirect jobs, creating a strong talent ecosystem across engineering, manufacturing, operations, and supply chain management. Beyond employment, the fab is set to act as an anchor for India’s broader semiconductor ecosystem, encouraging the growth of ancillary industries, component suppliers, and research-driven innovation across the region.
Gujarat’s selection as the home for India’s first semiconductor fab is the result of proactive policy support and world-class infrastructure planning. The state was the first in India to introduce a dedicated Semiconductor Policy, offering attractive incentives such as capital expenditure subsidies, land cost support, power tariff benefits, and exemptions from electricity duty. These measures have positioned Gujarat as the most preferred destination for semiconductor investments.
Dholera SIR, located along the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), offers several strategic advantages including large contiguous land parcels, assured water and power supply, multimodal connectivity, and proximity to strong chemical and manufacturing clusters. To meet the stringent requirements of semiconductor fabrication, the state is also investing in desalination plants and ultra-pure water infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted operations.
Tata Electronics’ semiconductor roadmap extends beyond Dholera. The company is also setting up a semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Jagiroad, Assam, with an investment of around ₹27,000 crore. Together, these projects are expected to significantly reduce India’s dependence on imported chips and strengthen the country’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
Industry experts believe the Dholera semiconductor fab will play a critical role as global companies seek to diversify chip manufacturing beyond traditional hubs. With India’s domestic semiconductor demand projected to reach $110 billion by 2030, the success of this facility could accelerate India’s emergence as a trusted and competitive semiconductor manufacturing destination.
