From Dholera to the World: EV Export Push + Domestic Chip Debut Put India in the Supply-Chain Fast Lane

India is set to boost its global supply chain with EV exports to 100 countries and the launch of its first domestically manufactured semiconductor chip in 2025.

Micron Technology’s ATMP plant in Sanand, Gujarat, began construction in 2023, with Phase 1 becoming operational in early 2025.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on 23 August that India will soon begin exporting electric vehicles (EVs) to 100 countries, while addressing the Economic Times World Leaders Forum.

Modi mentioned that a “very big program” related to this initiative would take place on 26 August, without sharing further details.

He said, “I want to tell you about another achievement of India. India is now set to export electric vehicles to 100 countries worldwide. A very big program related to this is also being held after two days on 26 August.”

The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s progress in the semiconductor sector, stating that the country’s first domestically manufactured semiconductor chip will enter the market by the end of 2025.

India missed the semiconductor opportunity decades ago, but the situation has now changed. “We all know that semiconductor manufacturing could have started in India 50–60 years ago, but India missed that too. Today, we have changed this situation. Semiconductor-related factories have started coming up in India,” Modi said.

Under the India Semiconductor Mission, several key projects are underway. Tata Electronics, in partnership with Taiwan’s PSMC, approved the Fab Plant in Dholera, Gujarat in February 2024 and will start wafer production by late 2026. Micron Technology’s ATMP plant in Sanand began in 2023, with Phase 1 operational in early 2025. The Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test (TSAT) facility in Morigaon, Assam, approved in February 2024, is expected to begin production in 2025. Other projects include CG Power and Kaynes Semicon units in Sanand, and the HCL-Foxconn venture near Jewar Airport, Uttar Pradesh, approved in May 2025.

These developments mark a major push to build an indigenous semiconductor ecosystem and promote India as a hub for green mobility and advanced technology. With plans to launch Made-in-India chips and export EVs globally, India aims to strengthen its role in the global supply chain.
