Actively Bringing Fab Construction Suppliers from Taiwan to Dholera, Says Powerchip
Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation is working closely with Tata Electronics and the Gujarat government to bring experienced Taiwanese fab construction suppliers to Dholera, strengthening India’s first commercial semiconductor manufacturing project.
Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), one of Taiwan’s leading semiconductor manufacturers, has confirmed that it is actively facilitating the participation of specialised fab construction suppliers from Taiwan in India’s first commercial semiconductor fabrication project at Dholera in Gujarat. Speaking at the Gujarat SemiConnect Conference, PSMC President Martin Chu said the company is confident in India’s semiconductor vision and praised the Central and Gujarat governments for creating a stable, transparent, and investor-friendly policy environment for global technology companies.
The Tata–PSMC semiconductor fabrication facility, being developed with an estimated investment of nearly $11 billion, is one of the flagship projects approved under the India Semiconductor Mission. Located within the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), the plant will be India’s first commercial 12-inch wafer fabrication unit and is expected to significantly enhance the country’s chip manufacturing capabilities. The project forms a key pillar of India’s broader strategy to reduce import dependence and strengthen domestic semiconductor supply chains.
Martin Chu highlighted that collaboration between PSMC and Tata Electronics is already underway across multiple critical areas, including fab construction planning, technology transfer, workforce training, and ecosystem development. He noted that the involvement of experienced Taiwanese suppliers—who have built and supported fabs across the globe—is essential to meeting the stringent technical standards required for semiconductor manufacturing. Their presence in Dholera will also help accelerate construction timelines while ensuring global-quality execution.
Emphasising long-term objectives, Chu said PSMC is encouraging more international partners to participate in India’s semiconductor journey while simultaneously supporting the growth of local suppliers. This dual approach, he said, will help build a resilient and self-sustaining semiconductor ecosystem in India. He reiterated confidence that both the Indian and Gujarat governments would continue to offer policy stability, investment protection, and infrastructure support necessary to attract sustained foreign investment.
In addition, Tata Electronics and PSMC have entered into a strategic memorandum of understanding with Himax Technologies, a Taiwan-based fabless semiconductor company specialising in display driver ICs and timing controllers. The partnership covers the complete semiconductor value chain—from chip design and wafer fabrication to packaging and electronics manufacturing services—serving both Indian and global markets. This collaboration is expected to support next-generation display technologies and low-power AI solutions while strengthening global supply chain resilience.
