State taking Centre’s help in bringing Tesla to Gujarat

Ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) 2024, Gujarat is collaborating with the central government to bring electric vehicle giant Tesla to the state, targeting locations such as Sanand-Bechraji or Dholera for potential manufacturing facilities.

As Gujarat prepares for VGGS 2024, the state government is actively working to attract Tesla Inc., with support from the central government. Discussions are ongoing for establishing a Tesla plant in the Sanand-Bechraji region—home to Tata Motors and Suzuki—or in Dholera. There is also potential for collaborations with Indian auto companies to strengthen local manufacturing and technology capabilities.

Gujarat as an Automobile Hub :

Gujarat has emerged as a key automobile hub with the establishment of Tata Motors’ Nano plant, Suzuki, Ford (later acquired by Tata Motors), and MG Motor’s only India plant in Halol. The state offers strong connectivity to ports and robust industrial infrastructure, making it an attractive destination for global EV manufacturers.

Tesla’s Global Outlook :

Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York, signaling interest in expanding operations in India. Despite fluctuations in Tesla’s stock and Q3 performance, the company remains committed to delivering 1.8 million vehicles by year-end, launching Cybertrucks in November, and supporting global EV adoption through collaborations such as the North American Charging Standard (NACS) technology adopted by Toyota from 2025.

Strategic Significance :

A Tesla plant in Gujarat could contribute to India’s $5 trillion economy goal by boosting EV manufacturing, technology adoption, and employment opportunities. Locations like Sanand-Bechraji and Dholera are ideal due to existing auto clusters, excellent infrastructure, and potential for export-oriented operations.
