Tata Electronics Signs MoU with Tokyo Electron to Purchase Semiconductor Equipment and Services

Tata Electronics has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan-based Tokyo Electron Limited (TEL) to procure advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment and services, strengthening India’s semiconductor ecosystem and supporting upcoming fabrication and assembly facilities.

In a significant step toward building a world-class semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India, Tata Electronics has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tokyo Electron Limited (TEL), one of the world’s leading semiconductor equipment manufacturers headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. This strategic collaboration is aimed at supplying critical semiconductor manufacturing equipment and related services for Tata Electronics’ upcoming facilities in India.

The partnership will play a key role in accelerating the development of India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant being established by Tata Electronics at Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), Gujarat. In addition, the MoU also supports Tata Electronics’ semiconductor assembly and testing facility being developed in Jagiroad, Assam. Together, these projects form the backbone of India’s ambitions to reduce dependence on imported chips and strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Under the agreement, Tokyo Electron will provide advanced equipment and technical services covering both front-end semiconductor fabrication—which involves the creation of silicon wafers—and back-end processes such as chip assembly, packaging, and testing. This end-to-end support is expected to ensure high-quality manufacturing standards that meet global benchmarks across multiple technology nodes.

A key component of the collaboration is workforce development. Tata Electronics’ engineering and operations teams will receive specialised training on Tokyo Electron’s equipment, enabling efficient operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of manufacturing processes. This knowledge transfer is expected to build a strong pool of skilled semiconductor professionals within India, supporting long-term industry growth.

The MoU also extends to joint efforts in research and development (R&D), with a focus on improving semiconductor manufacturing processes and advancing production technologies. Additionally, Tokyo Electron will explore opportunities to leverage India’s growing engineering talent by establishing engineering and support services within the country, contributing to its global product development initiatives.

Tata Electronics is investing approximately ₹91,000 crore in the Dholera semiconductor fab and around ₹27,000 crore in the Jagiroad assembly and test facility. These large-scale investments, supported by global technology leaders such as Tokyo Electron, are expected to catalyse the growth of India’s semiconductor ecosystem and drive innovation across sectors including automotive electronics, mobile devices, artificial intelligence, data centres, and industrial applications.

Founded in 1963, Tokyo Electron Limited is a globally recognised supplier of semiconductor production equipment and solutions for advanced technology markets including AI, autonomous mobility, green energy, IoT, and high-performance computing. Through this collaboration with Tata Electronics, TEL is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping India’s semiconductor manufacturing future.

The Tata Electronics–Tokyo Electron partnership marks an important milestone in India’s journey toward becoming a trusted global semiconductor manufacturing destination. By combining global technology expertise with India’s policy support, talent base, and large-scale infrastructure development, the collaboration is expected to significantly enhance the country’s position in the global electronics and semiconductor value chain.
