Tata Electronics signs tech pact with US chip firm for Dholera fabrication plant
Tata Electronics has signed a technology partnership with US-based Synopsys to support its upcoming semiconductor fabrication plant at Dholera, Gujarat.
New Delhi: Tata Electronics has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with California-headquartered semiconductor design and engineering firm Synopsys to collaborate across key technology areas for its upcoming semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat. The fab project, valued at approximately $10.9 billion, was announced earlier this year.
Under the agreement, Tata Electronics will deploy Synopsys’ foundry design platform, enabling the development of custom semiconductor products once the fab becomes operational. The collaboration will also cover areas such as factory automation, data analytics, computer-aided design, and technology transfer.
Synopsys will further support the Dholera fab by supplying product design kits (PDKs) and contributing to the development of intellectual property required for advanced chip manufacturing. These capabilities are expected to strengthen Tata Electronics’ ability to serve global clients seeking resilient and diversified supply chains.
Commenting on the partnership, Randhir Thakur, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Electronics, said the collaboration would help the company deliver integrated solutions across the electronics manufacturing value chain to global customers.
The Dholera semiconductor fabrication plant received approval from the Union Cabinet on February 29 under the Government of India’s Semiconductor and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem programme. Taiwan-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) is the project’s primary technology partner.
Once fully operational, the Dholera fab is expected to produce up to 3 billion chips annually, catering to sectors such as automobiles, smart appliances, railways, defence, and industrial electronics. The facility will manufacture chips across multiple nodes, including 28nm, 50nm, 55nm, and 90nm.
Industry experts view the Tata–Synopsys partnership as a significant step toward strengthening India’s semiconductor supply chain. The association with a globally established player like Synopsys is expected to enhance the credibility and client readiness of the Dholera fab as India moves beyond chip assembly and packaging into full-scale semiconductor manufacturing.
