Tata-Tesla join hands: Semiconductor to be made in Dholera
Important announcement ahead of Elon Musk's visit to India: Tesla has signed a strategic deal with Tata Electronics to manufacture semiconductor chips in Gujarat for global supply.
Elon Musk-led Tesla has reportedly signed a strategic agreement with Tata Electronics to acquire semiconductor chips for its global operations. The deal, executed discreetly a few months ago, positions Tata Electronics as a trusted supplier for top-tier international clients.
Tesla, the world’s most valuable automotive company by market capitalisation, is exploring opportunities to enter India, currently the fastest-growing automotive market. Elon Musk is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to discuss potential investments, including electric vehicle manufacturing facilities.
Industry analysts suggest that Tesla could invest approximately $2–3 billion to manufacture electric vehicles in India. The company is expected to initially prioritise premium EV models while evaluating local production of entry-level models in the future.
Ashok Chandak, President of the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA), noted that Tesla’s efforts to develop a local supplier ecosystem demonstrate its commitment to diversifying its supply chain. He also highlighted the need to strengthen India’s semiconductor sourcing capabilities, particularly for high-value sectors like automotive.
Tata Electronics has expanded its workforce by hiring 50–60 senior expatriates to enhance semiconductor technology, strategic planning, and design capabilities. These additions are aimed at boosting the company’s operations and establishing a strong global supply chain footprint.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Tesla has diversified component sourcing outside China for critical electronic, electrical, and mechanical parts. While producing some components in-house, the company continues to source specialised sub-assemblies from global suppliers.
Tata Electronics has set up semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Hosur (Tamil Nadu), Dholera (Gujarat), and Assam, with plans for further expansion to create a fully integrated supply chain in India. The company has invested approximately $14 billion in its semiconductor operations to date.
