Tata chip unit to be announced soon: Chandrasekaran

Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran has announced that the conglomerate will unveil its semiconductor chip fabrication unit “very soon,” describing it as a major investment that will strengthen India’s electronics and semiconductor ecosystem.

Speaking at the 20th Anantharamakrishnan Memorial Lecture on "India's Leadership in a Pivotal Decade," Chandrasekaran highlighted Tata Group’s strategic focus on future technologies, including Air India and the semiconductor sector. He confirmed that the semiconductor chip fab announcement is imminent and will involve a significant investment.

Reports indicate that Tata Group is exploring partnerships with leading Taiwanese chipmakers, including Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) and UMC Group, to develop the proposed semiconductor fabrication facility at Dholera, Gujarat. The plant is expected to produce chips across multiple technology nodes.

Chandrasekaran emphasized that India’s supply chain, including advanced manufacturing, is undergoing a transformation. With India’s large market, skilled workforce, and strategic advantages, the country is well-positioned to leverage opportunities in semiconductor manufacturing and become a key player in the global electronics ecosystem.
